Donna Holland Barnes, Ph.D.
“When Suicide Becomes an Option”
Dr. Barnes will discuss the leading pathways to suicide and evidence-based practices on prevention and intervention as well as post-vention.
Dr. Barnes is a Research Assistant Professor at Howard University’s Psychiatry Department in Washington, D.C. where she teaches suicide risk management and conducts research on families who have lost someone to suicide. She believes education is the most powerful tool in the healing process and the fight for suicide prevention, and has taken a leadership role by developing innovative courses on suicide. She is also working with bipolar patients on a collaborative genetics study with a research team in the department of psychiatry.
She is co-founder and President of the National Organization for People of Color against Suicide (NOPCAS) and a founding member of the National Council for Suicide Prevention (NCSP). She has served on national and local committees pertaining to suicidal behavior and appears on radio talk shows and in national magazines. Dr. Barnes sits on the board of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and The Organization for Attempters and Survivors of Suicide in Interfaith Services (OASSIS).
